I’m not a cruise person.

I’ve said this for years — casually, confidently — the way people say things they believe are fixed truths about themselves. Cruises felt too contained. Too programmed. Too far removed from the places I actually want to understand.

And yet, in the last year and a half, I’ve been on three of them:

• A Viking River cruise through the Rhine with my mom and grandmother.

• A Nile River cruise through Upper Egypt on a hosted research trip.

• And most recently, a Mediterranean sailing on Explora II with a dear friend.

So no — I’m still not a cruise person.

But I am someone who now understands when a cruise is the right container for a particular season of life. And when it absolutely is not.

This is not a recommendation list.

It’s a framework — built from experience — for deciding when a cruise works, who it’s for, and what it quietly takes away in exchange for what it gives.

The Cruise My Grandmother Chose

The time change was the hardest part.

On our arrival day, my grandmother didn’t believe me when I told her it was nighttime. She was convinced I was lying — certain it was the middle of the day — and insisted on “putting her face on” at 10:00 p.m. We negotiated. We argued. I eventually called my mom and said, please tell her to sit her butt in bed or this trip is over before it starts.

It was hilarious.

It was exhausting.

And it was the first reminder that this trip wasn’t about pace — it was about containment.

Mimi had opinions. Constantly:

• “The bedrooms and beds are a little small.”

• “The food stinks.”

• “So far, I think the cruise could be a little spicier.”

Spicier how? The food? The entertainment? The destinations? I never clarified.

The next day she praised the Black Forest cake as “out of this world” adding that she wished I “could taste it.” And to be fair, I could have. She just chose otherwise.

She loved the church in Strasbourg — loved it:

“Oh, I thought today was great. Strasbourg, the big church — that was my favorite.”

She hated the pretzel. Too salty. She liked the beer and the pizza, but reminded me we had good pizza in Baton Rouge.

At dinner one night, when she told me she liked the meal, I raised an eyebrow.

“Well,” she said, making a face, “it’s nothing to brag about. But we ate all day long, so I’m okay.”

The castles along the Rhine wore her out. The windmills did too. She did too much walking. She was “fine” though. They were “cool to see”.

At the end of the trip, I asked if she’d recommend it.

“I’d give it a nine out of ten,” she said carefully. “They’ve treated me like a queen.”

The cruise gave us something priceless: a shared experience that didn’t demand too much of her body or her energy, a year before she died. It allowed my mom, my grandmother, and me to travel together without constant logistical strain.

It was not exciting. It was not cool. And it remains one of my favorite trips of my life.

That’s when I learned my first rule of cruising:

Why Viking Worked — and When It Doesn’t

Viking is exceptional at what it does, particularly for the price point.

The staff knew our names. They quietly steered us away from tours that weren’t worth the energy and toward the ones that were. When my grandmother couldn’t walk one day in Cologne, they arranged tuk-tuks, so she could still see the city. The cruise directors were sharp, attentive, and deeply experienced.

Once you’re on the boat, you’re held.

That’s the point.

And for many people — especially older travelers — that holding is the luxury.

But I also watched a young couple on their honeymoon, there on their parents’ recommendation, and felt my stomach drop. It was… not that. Not even close.

The rooms are fine — but small. Taller travelers struggled in the showers. The experience improves dramatically with better room categories, especially if you value downtime in your cabin rather than socializing nonstop.

And the drills.

On Viking, you suit up in life vests and go through the full safety run-through like it’s middle school. It makes sense — the average age skews older — but it’s infantilizing in a way that’s both protective and telling.

This is not a cruise for novelty. It’s a cruise for ease.

And for Mimi? It was nearly perfect.

The Nile: When a Cruise Is the Best Way

Upper Egypt is different.

There is no better way to experience it than by boat.

We sailed on the MS Soleil — modern, elegant, excellent food, extraordinary staff — and it worked because the destination itself is epic. You spend your days absorbing temples, tombs, and history that stretches further back than your brain can comfortably process, and then you return to the calm luxury of the boat. A drink. A pool on the sundeck. Stillness.

The rhythm matters.

Some boats are smaller. Some have family suites. Some can be chartered entirely. Some are ultra-luxury; others are more accessible.

During our hosted research trip, we toured five different Nile vessels — not to choose between them, but to understand the range. Nile cruises vary widely, and matching the boat to the traveler makes all the difference.

The nightly entertainment is standard across the board — whirling dervish, belly dancing, local dinner buffets — but it’s beside the point. The point is contrast.

And route matters:

Always start in Aswan and end in Luxor. Ending with the Valley of the Kings is essential. Reversing the route dulls the impact.

This was active travel — physically and emotionally — and the boat functioned as restoration, not limitation.

I’d recommend this to nearly everyone.

Explora: The Cruise That Let My Body Exhale

Explora is… complicated.

It’s a true luxury cruise — elegant, comfortable, not stuffy — with entry-level rooms that feel genuinely indulgent. The outdoor spaces are exceptional. The hot tubs were rarely crowded. Sunsets with a DJ at the back of the boat became some of my favorite moments.

For the first time in a long time, my body exhaled.

Not moving luggage while visiting seven cities is freeing. Starting in Barcelona was perfect. Ending with a brief return to Rome before a late flight home was exactly enough.

But Explora doesn’t quite know who it’s for yet.

The crowd skewed older, while the branding aims younger. The casino and evening entertainment weren’t for me — and more importantly, many of the excursions weren’t either. The more active, adventurous tours were often canceled due to lack of interest, which meant defaulting to less compelling options or exploring independently.

For me, that was fine. I knew what to visit, where to shop, and where to eat. We were strategic about when to dine on board and when to eat off — Monte Carlo, St. Tropez, Florence. Food is part of the glamour in those places while the buffet worked beautifully on rest days.

But for travelers without the time, comfort, or curiosity to self-direct, this can quietly turn into a week of tourist wandering.

Different Cruises, Different Containers

Explora excels at slow, intentional travel — the kind where rest is the point.

Viking can be active or gentle, depending on how you use it or how old you are.

The Nile, by contrast, is immersive and demanding — active in a way that makes the boat essential rather than optional.

Which is how I came to understand that cruises aren’t about liking or disliking them — they’re about choosing the right structure for the life you’re living.

Why My Mom Loves Cruises Now

My mom has become a cruise person — and it makes complete sense.

As a retired traveler, she uses cruises for long, complex trips she wants to take now — Alaska, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia — without the exhaustion of constant unpacking and repacking. Cruises remove friction. They let her say yes more easily.

She’s not chasing novelty. She’s choosing sustainability.

And my very first thought was: tourist.

This route is social, energetic, and easier to navigate if you value bathrooms, food, and flexibility.

Mid-City Route (Choose on Purpose)

If you do Endymion, plan to stay put, hydrate, and commit. This is maximal Mardi Gras.

You can do Uptown and Mid-City on Saturday, but it’s a lot. If you value your feet, your patience, your sanity — and the rest of your weekend — most locals recommend choosing one.

Sunday: Big Energy, Better Flow

Sunday delivers spectacle without the burnout.

Parades run in this order:

• Okeanos – Bright, celebratory, and fun

• Mid-City – Community-driven and approachable

• Thoth – Powerful, meaningful, route includes hospitals (a favorite among locals)

• Bacchus – High-energy, celebrity monarchs, strong throws, and a crowd that knows how to pace itself

Sunday is one of the best days for visitors who want a full Mardi Gras experience without total exhaustion.

Tuesday: Mardi Gras Day — Choose Your Rhythm

Mardi Gras Day belongs to the city.

Uptown → French Quarter (Meg)

If the French Quarter feels overwhelming, Metairie offers a quieter, neighborhood-driven alternative.

These parades feel woven into daily life — stoops, families, lawn chairs, and long conversations. Less spectacle, more continuity.

Metairie is where Mardi Gras exhales.

Where to Watch (Because Logistics Matter)

Views are nice.

Bathrooms, exits, and staying power are better.

• The Columns (Uptown) – Wristbands = bathroom access. Ideal for Thursday and Saturday.

• Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar (Sunday) – Bacchus favorite. Lively, social, arrive early.

Mexico City is not a “check the boxes” destination. It’s layered, sprawling, creative, chaotic, deeply historical, and wildly alive. The kind of city that asks you to stay present, walk a little slower, eat one more thing, and resist the urge to rush.

It’s also one of the best winter getaways out there — sunny days, cool mornings, long walks, museum afternoons, late dinners, and energy that doesn’t quit.

This guide is for travelers who want to do the city well, not exhaust it.

First Things First: Arrival + Getting Around

Airport arrival (MEX):

If you’re a U.S. traveler, you can use the automated immigration machines on arrival (similar to Europe). Many people miss this and wait in long lines — don’t.

Airport taxis:

From MEX airport to Polanco, Condesa, Roma Norte, etc., expect 400–450 MXN max (not including tip). If someone quotes more, walk away.

I recommend Sitio 300 specifically for Terminal 1 arrivals (I flew Aeromexico). For other airlines or terminals, taxi setups may differ.

A Driver I Trust (and Will Use Again)

If you want to arrange airport transfers or day trips in advance, I highly recommend reaching out to Victor, a local driver I personally used while in Mexico City.

He’s:

• Warm, welcoming, and hilarious

• Incredibly reliable

• Deeply knowledgeable about the city

• Best for airport runs and planned day trips (rather than short Uber-style hops)

Victor doesn’t speak much English, but you won’t need it — Google Translate works perfectly, and I strongly recommend organizing plans in Spanish ahead of time.

Where to Stay: Choosing Your Base

Condesa & Roma Norte

Creative, leafy, walkable, café-filled, buzzy. Great for first-timers.

Polanco

Calmer, polished, and — right now — often a better value. Easy access to Chapultepec Castle, the Anthropology Museum, and excellent dining. A fantastic alternative if Condesa pricing feels inflated.

I stayed at the W Mexico City and had an exceptional experience — phenomenal staff, warm service, and standout food. Major shoutout to Executive Chef Matías Gallegillo.

Parque México (and why Condesa works)

Parque México is the heartbeat of Condesa.

Kids playing, boxing classes, dance groups, rollerbladers, dogs everywhere, couples lingering, vendors chatting. It’s green, lively, and full of real life — not curated, not staged.

There’s also Parque España nearby; together they essentially are Condesa. Locals will tell you Parque México is the better one — they’re right.

Perfect for:

• Morning people watching

• Pastry + coffee walks

• Rollerblading laps (yes, really)

• Dog lovers (great dog park)

Small detail that matters: bottled water here was 10 pesos, compared to 20+ pesos inside Chapultepec. Neighborhood living has its perks.

Museums Worth Your Time (Choose Depth Over Density)

Give it the time it deserves, or save it for another trip. Rushing it misses the point.

A completely different — and very refreshing — experience.

MODO explores culture through everyday objects: design, branding, habits, ephemera. It’s thoughtful, creative, and unexpectedly emotional in the way good design history often is.

This is a great choice if you:

• want something lighter after a heavy museum

• enjoy museums that make you think rather than overwhelm

It’s also very manageable in length — an easy yes if you’re museum-curious but don’t want another marathon.

MAIA Contemporary / Sublime Paraíso (Alexis Mata)

MAIA Contemporary

This one is about vibe as much as art.

I especially loved this space at night — it feels social, creative, and plugged into the city’s contemporary art energy. A great stop if you want something modern, atmospheric, and less formal.

UNAM (If You Have Time — or for a Return Trip)

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

UNAM is one of the most important universities in Latin America, with striking modernist architecture, murals, and multiple museums spread across a massive campus.

That said: this is not a quick add-on.

UNAM is best if you:

• love architecture and cultural institutions

• have a half day

• are already exploring the south (San Ángel / Coyoacán)

If your schedule is tight, save it. It’s a phenomenal reason to come back.

Food & Drink Highlights (Neighborhood Wandering Edition)

Mexico City rewards curiosity.

Walk. Wander. Follow the smell of something incredible and stop. Some of the best meals here aren’t planned — they’re discovered on foot, especially in neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa, where street life comes alive as the sun goes down.

A guiding principle to keep in mind as you eat your way through the city:

no country, no corn.

Food here is deeply tied to history, land, and daily life — and much of it revolves around what locals lovingly call Vitamin T:

tortas, tamales, tacos, tequila.

That said, the places below are worth intentionally seeking out as you explore. Think of them as anchors — then let curiosity fill in the rest.

Breakfast, Brunch & Coffee

• Banu Bakery — A beautiful bakery stop for pastries, bread, and an easy morning start in Condesa or Roma.

• Furniture Music — Part café, part listening bar, part design moment; excellent for breakfast or brunch. Get the croque madame.

• Cafe Libertad — Laid-back neighborhood café with great coffee and an unhurried rhythm.

• Cafe Toscano — Classic, reliable, and unfussy when you want something familiar and well done.

• Curiosa Juice Bar & Cafe — Fresh juices and light bites that feel good without trying too hard.

• Saint — Hands down the best cheesecake in the city. Full stop.

• Dulce Condesa — A charming pastry stop for something sweet between walks.

• Paletas Manhattan — Creative, artisanal paletas that are perfect on a warm afternoon.

• La Michoacana — A local classic for ice cream and paletas done the traditional way.

Casual & All-Day Eats

• Mercado Medellín — One of the most authentic markets in the city, with food and ingredients from across South America; ideal for wandering and grazing.

• Bocado Salumería — Italian-inspired sandwiches and charcuterie; casual, satisfying, and easy.

• Butcher & Sons (two locations) — Quality sandwiches done right; dependable and hearty.

• Zoco Fresh — Fast-casual Middle Eastern–inspired bowls and wraps that are fresh and convenient.

• Louis Chicken — Comfort food energy when you want something quick and satisfying.

• Madonna Pizzeria — One of the city’s most loved pizza spots. It’s lively, buzzy, and worth the hype. There are two locations, but the Roma location is the standout. Reservations are tough, but if you’re solo, an early walk-in (around 6:00–6:30 pm) can work beautifully. It did for me!

• Smashy’s — A no-nonsense smash burger done right. Juicy, fast, and unfussy. One of those places you find by smell alone and immediately understand why locals love it.

Mexican Classics & Regional Flavors

• Taquería Los Huarachines — Some of the best al pastor in the city; look for the vertical spit (shawarma-style).

• Achiote Cochinita Pibil — A focused spot for Yucatán specialties, especially cochinita pibil.

• Maiabik: de Yucatán a Tu Mesa — A thoughtful, regional take on Yucatán cuisine.

• Antolina — Elevated but approachable Mexican cooking; a great middle ground between casual and fancy.

Worth Planning Around

• BOTÁNICO — Do it. Phenomenal food, beautiful space, and a standout experience. Also: there are ~20 axolotls living here.

• Feral — A creative, modern restaurant with strong flavors and a cool, confident energy. It’s a great stop when you want something interesting without going full formal.

• Casa Portuguesa — Refined Portuguese flavors for a slower, more composed dinner.

Bars & Nightlife

• Lindy — A lively bar/restaurant right on Parque México; perfect for an early evening drink or casual bite.

• Malcriado Café & Wine Bar — A relaxed neighborhood wine bar that’s easy to love.

• La Nuclear Pulquería — A fun, social introduction to pulque culture.

• Mezcalito Roma Jazz — Mezcal, live jazz, and late-night energy in Roma.

• Bottega — A cozy wine bar right next door to Madonna in Roma. It’s an easy pre- or post-pizza stop for a glass of wine and a slower pace.

Pro Tip: Look for Sister Restaurants

In Mexico City, many of the most famous, hard-to-book restaurants have newer, lower-key sister spots that are often easier to get into — and just as good.

If reservations feel impossible, this is one of the smartest ways to eat well without the stress.

A few great examples:

• Can’t get into Contramar?

  Try Caracol de Mar — a sister restaurant with a similar menu and energy, and often more availability.

• Rosetta booked solid?

  Stop by Panadería Rosetta for pastries, bread, and a taste of the same philosophy without the full sit-down commitment.

• Popular Roma/Condesa spots fully reserved?

  Many chefs and restaurant groups quietly open second concepts nearby — slightly more casual, less hyped, and far easier to access if you know to look.

Bottom line:

If a place feels “too famous,” ask locals (or your hotel concierge) if there’s a sister restaurant. In CDMX, there often is — and it’s usually excellent.

Local Finds (While You Wander)

Part of what makes Mexico City special is what you stumble into — small, independent shops run by people who care deeply about what they make.

As you walk through Roma and Condesa, keep an eye out for local, mom-and-pop spots like these:

• Perfumerica Eau de Parfum — A beautiful, intimate fragrance shop specializing in niche and artisanal scents; a thoughtful stop if you love design and bringing home something personal.

• Lozart Cerámica — A local ceramics studio in Condesa, with all pieces sourced from Jalisco; beautiful craftsmanship and meaningful souvenirs.

These are the kinds of places that don’t always show up on “top 10” lists — but they’re often what you remember most.

Markets: Where to Go on Sunday

Bazaar Sábado (San Ángel)

An art market set between historic squares — calm, beautiful, and deeply local.

• Take Metrobus to La Bombilla or Uber

• The building itself is overpriced and touristy — that’s fine

• The real magic is outside, with local artists selling paintings, sculptures, prints, and handmade goods

My favorite vendors:

• Jati

Plaza San Jacinto is one of the main squares — don’t miss it.

If you’re staying south for the evening, head to Coyoacán for dinner — the square there has better nighttime energy and dining options.

Lucha Libre: Do. Not. Skip. This.

Lucha libre is theatrical, cultural, chaotic, hilarious, and deeply Mexican.

Do this tour. But please know it is not kid-friendly.

It adds context, keeps logistics easy, and makes the experience infinitely more fun. Shoutout to Lulu — an exceptional guide who truly brings it all to life.

Why it matters:

Lucha libre began underground — inspired by Roman-style wrestling seen in Texas. Early matches were held in parking lots. Cheap rent. Drunk crowds. Raw energy.

Then came the masks.

When a well-known boxer wore one to hide his identity, mythology was born. Wrestlers became characters — heroes and villains larger than life.

El Santo emerged as the ultimate good guy, fighting for what was right, always winning. During World War II, while much of the world was at war, Mexico entered a golden age of cinema — and lucha libre became part of its cultural identity.

Later came Blue Demon, then Mystico — flips, speed, spectacle. One trainer famously had to get permission from the Pope to be both a priest and a wrestler.

The crowd? Unfiltered. Loud. Hilarious.

And yes — one of the best parts is that men are finally the ones being objectified.

Timing tip:

September is especially fun (anniversary events). Early in the year, watch for betting matches — announced only 1–2 weeks in advance and they sell out fast.

Also: churros outside Arena México. Mandatory.

Safety, Honestly

Mexico City is not inherently unsafe — especially in neighborhoods like Condesa, Roma Norte, and Polanco — but you still need street smarts.

• No headphones while walking

• Wallet in front pocket

• Zipped crossbody bag

• No flashy valuables

• Explore mostly during the day if you’re solo

There is a visible police presence in many central neighborhoods, which helps counter outdated narratives — but awareness still matters.

Also: don’t buy drugs. It’s dangerous, irresponsible, and harms locals far more than travelers.

How Long Do You Need?

To do Mexico City well:

4–6 days is ideal.

Eat. Walk. Wander. Sit in parks. Absorb.

This is not a city to rush — and that’s exactly why it’s special.

Mexico City surprised me in all the right ways. It’s creative, soulful, overwhelming, grounding, and endlessly interesting — especially in winter.

That “trap” was Perveran Concept Store and if you’ve ever stepped inside, you’ll understand. Housed in a traditional cave building in the heart of Uçhisar, it feels less like a shop and more like stepping into a treasure chest — each piece carefully chosen, displayed with intention, and alive with story.

I went once and left with half my suitcase filled. I went back again because Ginger couldn’t stop thinking about the scarf I’d bought. And I’d go back tomorrow if I could.
